Ring in an auspicious Lunar New Year in Singapore and welcome the Year of the Rat in 2020, the first animal of the 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals. With a range of celebrations starting from 3 January 2020, immerse yourself in the joyous festivities of the new year as you learn about the Chinese culture and traditions, some of which are unique to Singapore!

A 10-day event to usher in the Year of the Rat, River Hongbao 2020 held its first rendition in 1987. Featuring choreographed fireworks, interactions displays, exquisite handmade lanterns and unique Hongbao (red packet) designs, this free event in Singapore is one of the largest for Chinese New Year.

This year, there will be nightly fireworks that will be visible from SKAI restaurant, JAAN By Kirk Westaway and Swissôtel The Stamford! Expect a 6-minute Fireworks Spectacular! display on the eve of Chinese New Year as we welcome the new lunar year in Singapore.

Chinese New Year Celebrations 2020 at Chinatown

The streets of Singapore’s Chinatown will be lit up with handmade lanterns featuring all 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals, flowers, gold coins and more. The Official Light Up and Opening Ceremony on 4 January 2020 includes entertaining performances and spectacular firecrackers and fireworks display. Expect a boisterous Festive Street Bazaar filled with traditional Chinese New Year goodies and decorations, lively stage performances and even an international lion dance competition.

A celebration of Singapore’s multi-cultural heritage, the Chingay Parade started in Singapore more than 4 decades ago as a way to make up for the ban of firecrackers, a traditional Chinese New Year practice to drive evil spirits away. In 2020, the “Colours in Harmony” Chingay Parade will involve 6,000 performers in the street performance and float parade with exciting highlights like the release of 200m long firecrackers and the world’s biggest and longest flying dragon.
